Csikszentmihalyi 提出了Flow 的理論,認為人們在進行活動時,如果是完全地投入,集中所有的注意力在這活動上,就會過濾掉其他不相關的知覺,即是進入到Flow 的狀態。後續有許多學者根據Flow 理論應用在其他領域的研究,如對運動活動、休閒活動等。
近年來開始有學者將Flow 理論應用於電腦的人機互動上,如Csikszentmihalyi(1990),Ghani,Supnick & Rooney(1991),Trevino &Webster(1992),Webster,Trevino & Ryan(1993),Ghani(1994),Novak, et al(1988),Chen, et al.(1999),Koufaris(2002),認為若是使用者與電腦互動產生Flow的經驗時,會產生正面影響的關係、產生較佳的使用意向等。(陳偉睿,民90;廖莉芬、湯宗益,民91)
